C2: Demonstrate an understanding that plants and animals need food, water, and gases to survive.

Curriculum Organizing Questions	What does this organism need to stay alive? What do people need to stay alive? What do plants need to live? What types of places could this organism live? Not live?
Elaboration	During the early grades students build understanding of biological concepts through direct experience with living things. Through these experiences they learn that all organisms have basic needs and that organisms only survive in environments where their needs can be met
Specific Ideas	People need water, food, air, waste removal, and a particular range of temperatures, just as other animals do. Benchmarks 6A2 Most living things need water, food, and air. Benchmarks 5C2 Plants need air, water, nutrients, and light. Benchmarks 5E1
Developmental & Instructional Implications	Students of all ages hold misconceptions about plant nutrition. Driver's book has an extensive section on the misconceptions regarding plant nutrition and gas exchange on pages 30-34.
