Developmental & Instructional Implications

Interviews of 15 year olds showed misconceptions such as "acids eat material away" and did not preceive the reactions of acids with metals as a proeprty of acids. Driver p. 90.

Students are often confused by the several science models of acids and bases because, although words and ideas change their meaning from one model to another, students are not always made aware of this. Driver p. 91.

Because the term "base" is less prevalent in daily life than "acid", students are less likely to form preconceptions of bases before instruction. Driver p. 91.
