  • List the economic use of this (specify) material.
  • Distinguish between mineral resources, reserves, and ores.
Elaboration

The earth has many resources of great importance to human life. Some are readily renewable, some are renewable only at great cost, and some are not renewable at all. SFAA p. 44

A wide variety of minerals are sources for essential industrial materials, such as iron, magnesium, and copper. Many of the best sources are being depleted , making it more and more difficult and expensive to obtain those minerals. SFAA p. 44

Specific Ideas
  • Students at this level can trace the production cycle of common materials such as paper, lumber, rubber, steel, aluminum, glass, petroleum, and plastics. Their investigation should begin with the natural formation of raw materials and examine the techniques employed to gather these raw materials, process them into workable materials, transform them into industrial and consumer products, and dispose of the products when they are no longer useful.
