I1: Develop a variety of ways to describe the motion of an object.

Curriculum Organizing Questions

  • Does the object move?
  • How does the object move?
  • Is the motion in a straight line, zigzag, round and round, back in forth, etc?
  • Is the motion fast or slow?
Elaboration

From the outset, students should view, describe, and discuss all kinds of moving things--themselves, insects, birds, trees, doors, rain, fans, swings, volleyballs, wagons, stars, etc.-- keeping notes, drawing pictures to suggest their motion, and raising questions like those listed above. Benchmarks pg. 89.

Specific Ideas
  • Things move in many different ways, such as straight, zigzag, round, back and forth, and fast and slow. Benchmarks 4F1.
Developmental &Instructional Implications

At this level, the questions that students raise are more important than an elaboration of the answers.

Examples
  • Discuss how birds, swings, fans, balls, animals, people move
  • Have children do different types of movements.
  • Show examples of how musical instruments vibrate.
