K-2

M4: Demonstrate some practices for recycling and care of resources.

Curriculum Organizing Questions

  • What do you recycle at home?
  • How do we care for resources here at school?
Elaboration

An awareness of recycling, both in nature and in human societies, may play a helpful role in the development of children's thinking. Familiarity with the recycling of materials fosters the notion that matter continues to exist even though it changes from one form to another. Benchmarks p. 119.

Specific Ideas

  • Many materials can be recycled and used again, sometimes in different forms.Benchmarks 5E2.
  • The supply of many resources is limited. If used, resources can be extended through recycling and decreased use.NSES F3c.
Developmental & Instructional Implications

At this age examples that are familiar from home or school will be much more effective.
