This course covers United States history, geography, economy, government, cultural and intellectual events, and foreign policy from the Jacksonian period through the late nineteenth century. The first half of the course focuses on Jacksonian democracy, American reform movements of the mid-nineteenth century, westward expansion, and the growth of sectionalism. The second half of the course addresses the Civil War, Reconstruction, the settlement of the American West, and the Industrial Revolution. The course is structured chronologically and incorporates writing, critical thinking, interpretation of primary and secondary sources, and research skills.
