COURSE/SUBJECT TITLE: Seventh Grade Guidance

GRADE LEVEL: 7th

LENGTH OF TIME: 60 minutes twice a month

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Currently, the focus of Seventh Grade Guidance is the implementation of the LifeSkills Training Program developed by Gilbert J. Botvin, Ph.D. LifeSkills is a research- based substance abuse program intended to address the primary causes of substance abuse. The goal of the lessons is to teach students the necessary life skills that will support them in resisting substance use and abuse. The LifeSkills program for seventh grade is comprised of the following lessons:

Lesson 1: Drug Abuse and Violence

ESSENTIAL OUTCOME: To increase students' awareness of the social factors promoting drug abuse.

ASCA NATIONAL STANDARD:

1. PS:C1.8 learn about the emotional and physical dangers of substance use and abuse.

MLR:

1. H:A3 analyze the effects that risky behaviors have on personal health

Lesson 2: Making Decisions

ESSENTIAL OUTCOME: To teach students how to make informed decisions that are consistent with what is important to them.

ASCA NATIONAL STANDARD:

1. PS:B1.1 use a decision making and problem solving model

2. PS:B1.2 understand consequences of decision and choices

3. PS:B1.3 identify alternative solutions to a problem

4. PS:C1.7 apply effective problem solving and decision making skills to make safe and healthy choices

MLR:

1. CP:A2 use teamwork strategies and apply communication and negotiation skills to decision making

2. H:F1 demonstrate individual and collaborative decision-making processes

Lesson 3: Media Influences

ESSENTIAL OUTCOME:To increase students' awareness of the techniques used by advertisers to manipulate consumer behavior and to teach students how to resist these techniques.

ASCA NATIONAL STANDARD:

1. PS: Students will acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and interpersonal skills to help them understand and respect self and others.

Lesson 4 : Coping with Anxiety

ESSENTIAL OUTCOME: To teach students how to cope with situations producing anxiety.

ASCA NATIONAL STANDARD:

1. PS:B1.4 develop effective coping skills for dealing with problems

2. PS:C1.10 learn techniques for managing stress and conflict

Lesson 5: Coping with Anger

ESSENTIAL OUTCOME: To teach students reasons and techniques for controlling anger

ASCA NATIONAL STANDARD:

1. PA:A1.8 understand the need for self-control and how to practice it

2. PS:B1.4 develop effective coping skills for dealing with problems

3. PS:C1.10 learn techniques for managing stress and conflict

Lesson 6: Communication Skills

ESSENTIAL OUTCOME: To teach students how to communicate effectively

ASCA NATIONAL STANDARD:

1. PS:A2.6 use effective communication skills

2. PS:A2.7 know that communication involves speaking, listening, and nonverbal behavior

MLR:

1. H:E1 demonstrate healthy ways to listen and communicate with family, peers and others

Lesson 7: Social Skills

ESSENTIAL OUTCOME: To teach students basic social skills in order to help them develop successful interpersonal skills

ASCA NATIONAL STANDARD:

1. PS:A2.6 use effective communication skills

MLR:

1. H:E1 demonstrate healthy ways to listen and communicate with family, peers and others

Lesson 8: Assertiveness

ESSENTIAL OUTCOME: To teach students how to become more assertive

ASCA NATIONAL STANDARD:

1. PS:A1.5 identify and express feelings

2. PS:A2.6 use effective communication skills

MLR:

1. H:E1 demonstrate healthy ways to listen and communicate with family, peers and others

Lesson 9: Resolving Conflicts

ESSENTIAL OUTCOME: To have students review, acquire, and practice the skills needed to successfully resolve conflicts

ASCA NATIONAL STANDARD:

1. C:C2.2 learn how to use conflict management skills with peers and adults

2. PS:B1.6 know how to apply conflict resolution skills

MLR:

1. H:E3 demonstrate conflict resolution strategies

Lesson 10: Resisting Peer Pressure

ESSENTIAL OUTCOME: To teach students how to resist peer pressure to smoke, drink, or use drugs

ASCA NATIONAL STANDARD:

1. PS:B1.8 know when peer pressure is influencing a decision

2. PS:C1.9 learn how to cope with peer pressure
