COURSE/SUBJECT TITLE: Fifth Grade Mathematics

LENGTH OF TIME: Full Year (60/65 minutes every day)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students in grade 5 are in their final year of the Everyday Math series. The curriculum focuses on a problem-solving approach based on everyday situations that develop critical thinking. Mathematical communication, including understanding and evaluating the mathematical thinking and strategies of others is stressed. There is also frequent practice of basic skills through ongoing program routines and mathematical games.

The Everyday Math program uses an instrumental approach that revisits topics regularly through activities that explore a wide variety of mathematical content to ensure full concept development. Units covered include:

  • Geometry Explorations and the American Tour

  • Division

  • Fractions, Decimals, and Percents

  • Using Data; Addition and Subtraction of Fractions
