COURSE/SUBJECT TITLE: Physical Education
LENGTH OF TIME: Two Quarters (60/65 minutes every other day)
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Class focus is on a cooperative, respectful and safe learning environment. Students will be given an opportunity to evaluate their five health-related components of fitness. Students learn and practice loco motor and manipulative skills while interacting with peers. Classes will teach the positive benefits of fitness and physical activity. The units covered are:
UNIT #1: Cooperative skills
UNIT #2: Movement skills
UNIT #3: Physical Fitness Activities and Knowledge
REPORTING STANDARD: Movement and motor skills
Students will acquire, demonstrate and practice throwing, catching, kicking and rolling skills in a variety of simple games (e.g. foxtail relay, spider bowling, volley-up or mystery box).
Students will adapt a skill to the demands of the environment (e.g. pass a ball or Frisbee to a moving receiver, receive a ball while being defended or adjust the skill to the height of the ball).
Students will apply correct striking skills using different implements.
Students will identify and use different strategies in modified games.
REPORTING STANDARD: Health-related physical fitness
Students will identify physical and mental benefits of regular physical activity.
Students will complete multiple health related fitness assessments (including cardiovascular), assess results, and observe changes over time.
Students will describe, practice and give examples of the five health-related fitness components: flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength and body composition.
REPORTING STANDARD: Personal and social safety skills
Students will know and demonstrate safe and respectful use of equipment.
Students will identify, model and practice safe and respectful interactions (good sportsmanship) during physical activities.
