Bio:

I have taught Spanish at CHRHS since 2007. I live in a 200 year-old house in Thomaston with my daughter. I grew up in both California and Puerto Rico, which is why I am a Spanish-speaker, and consider myself bi-cultural. Prior to being a high school teacher, my previous work experience was primarily with high-risk youth in California and Maine. In California I worked with gang-involved youth, and in Maine I worked with homeless youth. I have also led and co-led Spanish “Immersion Weekends” at the Penobscot School in Rockland. I love working with teenagers, which is why I teach and enjoy teaching.

I have traveled through several Spanish-speaking countries during my life, including: Mexico, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, Spain, and Puerto Rico. I have also travelled throughout Europe. In addition to living in some Spanish-speaking countries, I have also lived and worked in the Czech Republic.

I feel fortunate for having experienced the diversity of living in other countries and to be part of other cultures. I like to share my travel experiences with my students to encourage them to want to learn about other cultures and hopefully inspire them to travel and visit other parts of the world. As a language teacher I want to encourage them to learn another language so that they may be able to communicate with people in other countries and to increase their global awareness.

In addition to being a Spanish-speaker, I have taken 3 years of Italian. Besides learning another beautiful language, being an Italian student has helped me to better understand  the challenges that some of my students may face in the foreign language classroom.
