Creative Writing
Ms. Cole
Room 224 - Period White 3

Syllabus
Description:

Colecatraz welcomes you.  Prepare to journey deep into your creative self. Through the analysis and evaluation of works from both published and unpublished authors, you will expand your understandings of the craft and the writing process. You will be expected to write in and out of class, keep a writers’ journal, and complete an intensive self-designed final product that may include fiction samples, poetry, and visual representations. In class,  you will explore the writers’ work-shopping process and participate in creative adventures, so homework will consist of journal assignments and larger written pieces.

Expectations:

Expectations

*This is a writing intensive course and you will be expected to complete revisions, journals, and writing outside of class- it is important that you participate in this work.  As with any class, I will allow exceptions in case of alien invasion or a sudden attack of bubonic plague.  All other excuses pale in comparison.

*You are expected to be an active and engaged writer and editor within the classroom, engaging in discussions, group work, and individual tasks (please refrain from texting your bffl, photobooth-ing selfies, or playing online Clash of Clans).

*You are expected to experiment- this is, after all, creative writing.

*Please come to class on time and readywith (I really shouldn’t have to say this):

         *iPad (charged)

         *Composition notebook

         *Pen/Pencil

         *Completed assignments

*Please respect yourself, your class, your environment, and your teacher (do I need to say this)?

*Major assignments are due at the beginning of class.  Please have them printed and ready to hand in by the time the bell rings.

*No electronic devices are to be used without teacher permission.  All cellphones should be turned off prior to the start of class. Failure to comply will result in the confiscation of the device for the remainder of the day and multiple infractions will result in dire technological repercussions.

*Mistakes are inevitable.  Some mistakes turn into even greater successes.  I don’t expect you to be perfect and I encourage you to extend past your intellectual comfort zone.  I make mistakes just like everyone else, please feel free to politely and respectfully point them out, so I too can grow.

*I am here to help you.  I am available after school for help every day until 3 pm.  If you would like to arrange to meet longer or at a different time, please let me know in advance and I will work with you to find a time.

Absences

This class is a progression, it is important to make an effort to be present. If you are absent it is your responsibility to see me (or email me) for the work you missed.  You should come see me the day you return to discuss missed work and get assignments.  In addition to seeing me please check the class website.  If you have a scheduled absence, come see me prior to the day you will be out.  Speak with me if you have a valid reason for needing an extension on an assignment. Communication is key.  I am best reached through email at: sara.cole@fivetowns.net.
