Basic Texts: The Scarlet Letter, The Crucible,  Native Son, A Raisin in the Sun, Nigger,  The Grapes of Wrath, Death of a Salesman, and Our Town .
 
 
Course Outline/Description:
We will be studying the changes in American  culture over time from a literary perspective. Art imitates life. Students will be closely analyzing literature using reading journals and analytical essays. We will emphasize the  “writing process” approach (Pre-writing, drafting, peer editing, revising, more editing, revising. . . ) A typical class will involve a discussion of the assigned literature, reading some drama,  analytical  activities, and some in class writing.
 
 
 
 
Extra Help If you need it, come and get it. Red 4, White 4 and before/after school.
 

 
Expectations:

Expectations/Requirements  for Your Success:

-Strong critical reading skills, you will be  analyzing some difficult material.

- Expect  35+ pages/ an hour   of preparation for each class(weekend assignments may be longer.)

- You must have a three ring binder (or  a folder for your handouts) and some type of filing system at home - this is very important come final exam time.

 

-You are expected to be in class, on time, with your class materials and completed homework ,  and a writing implement.  Meeting these basic expectations is a major factor in your participation grade.

 

-Participate! It is part of your daily grade! If you do not participate your grade will suffer, and you will not enjoy yourself.

Grading

20% quizzes and small in-class writing

30% writing

30% exams

20%  participation

 

Final = 18% of semester grade
